This Udu is inspired by the African model. Its long striated neck can be used for the game. Its opening generates a punchy high-pitched sound, which creates a beautiful gap with the basic bass tone.
For 20 years, the Udu Schlagwerk Drums have been handcrafted by the designer and ceramist Kai Koesling. We have assembled a wide and diverse range of models inspired by original African instruments as well as our own designs and developments in the design of the Udu Drums. The Udu originated in Nigeria, where members of the Hausa and Ibo tribes discovered the strange sonority generated by terracotta jars with two openings. Udu means "jar" in the ibo language. In addition to Africa, the use of this instrument has also spread to Latin America and the Caribbean. Since their introduction in Western music, the Udu Schlagwerk are part of the percussionists' basic instruments, thanks to their rhythmic qualities and sound effects. It is played by opening and closing the lateral orifice with the flat of the hand. This is how deep bass is born, reminiscent of the sound of the Indian tabla. This game technique is combined with the clear and punchy sound produced by hitting the fingers on the sound box. All our Udu Drums are hand-crafted. This technique of manufacturing guarantees optimal sound development.
