Since emerging from the close-knit punk scene of California’s East Bay in the early 1990s, Green Day have evolved into one of the most popular and creatively ambitious rock ’n’ roll bands of all time. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong—drawing on the buzz-saw guitar of the Ramones and Hüsker Dü, and the raw poetics of the Replacements’ Paul Westerberg—has evolved over the years into a fiercely distinctive guitarist and songwriter.
