Avantone Active Mixcubes are designed to be full-range, high-resolution powered miniature reference monitors for fixed or remote locations. The secondary facet of the engineering was to create a timeless design that complements a single full-range transducer.
Performance objective
Studios primarily use larger 2-way and 3-way monitors designed to represent a reference point of view at higher listening levels. However, in this new era of high definition audio, there is still a need to hear the sound of your mix when played back on small 'low bass' systems, such as televisions, clock radios , computers, car radios, iPod docking stations, etc. It is important to make mixing judgments based in part on listening to reference monitors that will not convey tonal anomalies caused by substandard crossovers or full-range speakers. Particular attention is always given to the critical mid-range areas (vocals/guitar/keyboard). This is where having a full-range monitor without a crossover is really telling. Ten months of research and development, comparative listening and tuning have gone into the harmonization of the AVANTONE MixCubes. The result is very smooth sound, an upgrade to the full range of original Sound Cubes 5C. Listening tests reveal that the MixCubes have a smooth, more open and transparent response in the high end, with extended bass, while retaining their original character.
Casing design
The original 5C Sound Cubes were made of ½” particle board covered with glued wood grain contact paper. We chose to use a thicker, denser MDF board due to its high rigidity and inherent low resonance characteristics. We started with a 165 mm (6 1/2″) sealed cube with rounded edges. We then chose an elegant gloss polyurethane finish “RETRO-CREAM”. The originals were fitted with screws or, on later models, plastic terminals mounted on a recessed plastic cup. We opted for nickel-plated and machined solid metal terminals (double banana spacing) mounted on a black anodized, milled and screen-printed aluminum terminal plate. We then added a 7mm thick neoprene pad recessed into the base of the enclosure to act as non-slip sound insulation. Additionally, for creative mounting situations, we recessed an industry standard 5/8″-27 mic stand mount into the base.
Speaker design
The originals were a basic 5″ stamped frame design. We engineered a proprietary 5.25″ die-cast aluminum driver/cone assembly to exceed the performance of the originals. The mounting bezel is then polished for a sleek appearance. The paper cone, chosen for its musical character, is custom designed and manufactured from the finest New Zealand paper pulp, with added mica fibers for lightness and rigidity. The fabric wrap is made in Japan with very strict uniform thickness tolerances. The speaker's top plate and T-yoke are made of Sumitomo 1008 low-carbon steel, which achieves the highest patterned flux density in the air gap. The magnets are Y-40 (MIL-SPEC) grade, resulting in a 43 oz. motor structure. High-power, low-distortion motor structure.
Amplifier design
We designed the amplifier module from the ground up to make it a true professional-grade amplifier. It incorporates “overload” concepts in component selection as well as safety. The result is a "no compromise" amp with robust headroom characteristics that rival the performance of much more expensive rackmount studio amps.
