Their main acoustic qualities are an excellent response in all registers, allowing even pianissimo attack of high-pitched notes and flexibility allowing the execution of large intervals legato or saccato. Traditional Vandoren reeds combine the finest end with the thickest heart, allowing for a flawless articulation with a full, dark sound. The design of these reeds allows to obtain an extremely pure sound thanks to the combination of two factors: A very fine end of the reed (where the zone of vibration is maximum), an important vertebral column (more wood in the zone gradually leading to the heel). These reeds are recognizable by a horizontal line which delimits the zone of scratching of the bark.
