Contents: Jacques Pierre Joseph Rode was born in Bordeaux, Aquitaine, France, on February 16th, 1774. He travelled to Paris at the age of 13, where he soon became a favorite pupil of Giovanni Battista Viotti, who found the boy to be so talented that he charged him nothing for the lessons. Rode collaborated with Baillot and Kreutzer on the official Violin Method of the Conservatoire of Paris, published in 1802. He also served as violin soloist to Napoleon I of France and toured extensively in the Netherlands, Germany, England, and Spain, staying with Francois-Adrien Boieldieu in Saint Petersburg for 1804-1809, and later spent much time in Moscow. Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his last violin sonata (Opus96) for Rode when the violinist was visitingVienna. Rode died on November 25th, 1830,at Cheateau de Bourbon near Damazan,Lot-et-Garonne, in his native Aquitaine.
