Performance Objective
Studios primarily use large format 2- and 3-way monitors designed to represent a wide reference of high-level monitoring. That said, in this new era of high-definition audio, it is still essential to listen to your mix on a system that is limited in the low frequencies, such as on a television, radio, computer, car stereo, iPod station, etc It is important to make mixing decisions by analyzing the mix with listenings that do not generate any sound distortion caused by the filters or on listenings with limited bandwidth. It is important to pay particular attention to the mid frequencies of the vocals/guitar/keyboard. This is where full-range listening without filtering becomes very useful. Ten months of research and development, comparative listening and modifications led to the design of the AVANTONE MixCubes. The result is a very smooth sound, with the benefit of wideband reproduction, compared to the original 5C Sound Cubes. Listening tests reveal that the MixCubes deliver a smooth, more open, transparent high-end response with extended bass response, while retaining their original basic character.
Eaves design
The original 5C Sound Cubes™ were made of 12mm particleboard covered in a finish simulating the grain of wood. We decided to switch to thicker and denser medium-density panels offering superior rigidity and low resonances. We started with a 165mm closed cube with rounded corners. We therefore opted for an elegant high-gloss finish in “RETRO-CREAM” polyurethane. The initial sheets were equipped with screws, or later, with plastic terminal blocks mounted on a recessed circular plate. We decided to switch to high-end nickel-plated machined solid terminal blocks (in double-banana format) and mounted on a milled and screen-printed black anodized aluminum plate. We then added a 7mm neoprene support base under the baffle to serve as a non-slip surface and sound isolator. In addition, to meet the needs of more complex installations, we have integrated a standard 5/8 inch threaded micro header under the base.
Speaker Design
The original speakers were 127mm pressed-basket elementary transducers. We designed our own 133mm cast aluminum basket and our own basket/diaphragm assembly to improve the performance of the original speakers. The fixing circle of the bowl is then polished to give it an aesthetic of the best taste. The paper membrane, selected for its musical characteristics, has been completely designed and manufactured from the best New Zealand wood pulp with the addition of mica fibers to reduce weight and increase rigidity. The fabric pendant light is made in Japan with exacting adherence to draconian tolerances. The top plate and speaker T-assembly are made of Sumitomo 1008 low carbon steel, which achieves the greatest magnetic flux for moving the voice coil. The magnets are Y-40 grade (machining specs), and feature a high power, low distortion 1,200 gram magnetic motor.
Amplifier design
We have totally designed the amplifier module to achieve totally professional performance. We have largely exceeded the strictest quality criteria in the selection of components, for their electrical performance and their reliability over time. The result is a “no compromise” amplifier with exceptional headroom characteristics that rival the performance of studio rack amplifiers sold for far more.
