The Peters Editions "The Complete Chopin - A New Critical Edition" series is firmly established as the most important current scientific edition of Chopin's music and is a must-have for any discerning pianist. The world's foremost Chopin editors, under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief John Rink, bring their unparalleled collective knowledge to give the project a unique authority, drawing on the most recent international research. "The Complete Chopin" prioritizes the needs of the practical pianist and provides a beautifully presented performance text of each work, based on a single primary source as well as top tier variants, along with in-depth critical commentary and an enlightening English preface. , French and German.

Edition Peters is now delighted to present Roy Howat's new edition of Chopin's “Three New Studies” within “The Complete Chopin”. Originally published in 1840 in the “Method of Methods” which brought together several composers, the “Three New Studies” are Chopin's least overtly virtuoso studies, but arguably the most sophisticated of all in terms of sensibility training. from pianist to sound, rhythm and texture. Debussy once said that he had "worn out his fingers" while playing the second of them.

180 years later, it seems extraordinary that new details can still be found in the pieces, but Howat's edition publishes some for the first time, including a number of melodic variations in the first Etude, as well as notes in the second Study which all previous editions had suppressed. Literally acting as a pivot in the structure of the Second Study, these authentic notes - restored here with sensitivity - alter our perception of the texture and harmonization of music as the piece takes flight on one of the strings. most breathtaking modulation patterns of Chopin. Our edition also confirms some authentic fingerings still unknown to most pianists, such as the whimsical thumb that "skips" over the black keys at the end of the third Study.

In accordance with the editorial procedure for this series, this edition is based on one main source, namely Chopin's manuscript carefully prepared for his friend Moscheles. Additionally, some of the changes Chopin introduced after release are shown here as variants, allowing pianists to choose performance options knowingly knowing their origin.

The working concept behind the series "The Complete Chopin - A New Critical Edition":

“The Complete Chopin” is based on two key premises. First, there can be no definitive version of Chopin's works: variants are an integral part of the music. Second, merging multiple sources - then producing a version of the music that never really existed - should be avoided. Consequently, the working procedure of publishers is to identify a single main source for each work and to prepare an edition of that source (which they consider to be “the best”, even if it cannot be definitive). At the same time, important variations from other authorized sources are reproduced either alongside or, in some cases, in the main text of the music, in the footnotes or in the critical commentary, thus allowing comparisons. scholarly and facilitating the choice of interpretation.
