The MK 2's linear frequency response to front incident sound waves produces a very natural sound for near-field recordings (i.e. close to the sound source) . This capsule can be installed very close to the sound source without sounding too bright or harsh.
Note that there is some directivity at high frequencies due to the physics of sound. So even with an omnidirectional microphone, the direction the capsule is "facing" remains important. The MK 2 is often used for acoustic measurements, an application for which it has gained considerable reputation.
