Ludwig van Beethoven
Cello Sonata in D major op. 102 # 2

Jens Dufner (Publisher)

Ian Fountain (Fingers)

David Geringas (Cello fingering)

Urtext Edition, paperback binding

string part with or without fingering indications

The two Sonatas op. 102 composed in 1815 stand on the border of Beethoven's late style, often with austere tones. A critic of the original edition declared in 1818 that "they are certainly among the strangest and weirdest things that have been written in a long time." From the established classical scheme, Beethoven explores here the possibilities of transformation and extension of the sonata form, which make opus 102 the final accomplishment of his works for cello. In the Sonata in D major, the way Beethoven uses traditional counterpoint is reflected: if the initial movement allows admiring refined combinations of excessively varied themes, the "Allegro fugato" part of the Finale shows how Beethoven draws from 'a simple theme an art of the most elaborate fugue. The Urtext edition of Jens Dufner is based on his work for the critical apparatus of the Complete Edition of Beethoven's works, and thus offers a musical text of a high scientific level. In the preface as in the critical commentary, he explains the concept and the question of the sources of this sonata. Ian Fountain and David Geringas provide the fingerings.
