Although it only has one diaphragm, the MK 5 capsule allows you to choose between two directivity characteristics. Switching is strictly mechanical and is accomplished using a side-mounted slide switch. Commutativity is achieved here without the usual compromises. For example, we see that the frequency response remains “up” up to the highest frequencies, which is unusual for a microphone with switchable polar pattern.
In the “Omni” position, the MK 5 is a pressure sensor whose frequency response is constant down to the lowest frequencies. As a result, it is insensitive to wind, plosives and mechanical vibrations and its proximity effect is zero. Unlike double diaphragm microphones, in the “Cardio” position it maintains its directivity even at the lowest frequencies. The advantages of its design lie in its clear sound which is immediately perceptible. Compared to the corresponding non-switchable capsules (MK 2 and MK 4), the MK 5 slightly emphasizes the treble.
