Marc-André Hamelin (Fingering)
Urtext edition, piano transcription, paperback binding
Bach / Busoni - this combination makes pianists' hearts beat faster. For Busoni even manages to transcribe for piano the works of Bach that were originally custom-made for another instrument in such a way that the original sound world remains perceptible, without preventing the concert grand piano from displaying its full potential. His transcription of the Toccata for organ in D minor BWV 565 (which, after a transitional period of uncertainty, is today again considered a full-fledged work by Bach) was to, in 1900, alongside the Toccata in C major BWV 564, concluding the series of his arrangements by Bach for the Breitkopf & Härtel editions. According to Busoni, a worthy conclusion, because these Toccatas - as he let his editor know - "clearly constitute the best of what I have succeeded in doing in this field, and I am convinced of to be able to promise a strong impression ”. Éditions G. Henle shares this point of view and presents the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor in an attractive Urtext edition, which draws on all the sources and offers beautifully performed fingerings by the exceptional pianist Marc-André Hamelin.
