O salutaris hostia is the title of a Christian hymn composed by Saint Thomas Aquinas. This hymn has inspired many composers of the Renaissance including Josquin des Prés, Thomas Tallis and one of my favorite musicians, Pierre de la Rue, who lived on the edge between the 15th and 16th centuries. The "O salutaris hostia" of the latter is a short piece with four voices to which I applied, something new to me, principles of automatic writing. I first stretched the "harmonic skeleton" of the original work over 7 minutes and 30 seconds (which multiplies the total duration by 5 compared to the original) then I defined a list of one Twenty modes of games. Then I applied these game modes to the existing harmony by organizing progressive transitions from one setup to another. Therefore, despite the permanent instrumental activity and the perpetual transformation of the texture, a feeling of stretched time and contemplation is established by the regularity of the subject. I have often been inspired by models from the past to write works (Gesualdo, Schubert, Schumann) but this is the first time that the model is so pregnant despite the treatments that are applied to it.
