The romance for a melodic instrument and piano represented, in French salon music of the nineteenth century, a very popular genre. Saint-Saens, too, wrote several pieces of this kind for violin, cello, and horn. His unique Romance for Flute was born in 1871, shortly after the founding of the National Music Society. It was in this new forum of piano music and chamber music that it was created a year later. Despite its brevity, this piece has many harmonic and melodic delicacies, which made it quickly popular with flutists - both in its original version with piano and in its later version for orchestra. The urtext edition of Henle is the first critical edition of this work also very popular in the educational repertoire.
