Franz Schubert Sur le fleuve D 943 for voice, horn and piano
Elisabeth Föhrenbach (Publisher)
Urtext Edition, paperback binding
Original tone for loud voice
With his instrumentation for voice, horn and piano, Schubert's lied Auf dem Strom (On the river) immediately brings to mind his Hirt auf dem Felsen (Pâtre sur le rocher, HN 969), with a clarinet required. The two pieces were composed in 1828, both according to the wishes of a musician - in this case the horn player Rudolf Lewy. It was with him and the tenor Ludwig Tietze that Schubert gave the first performance of Auf dem Strom on March 26, 1828 in Vienna. They were so successful that soon after again the work appeared on the program and the press got carried away, speaking of an "indescribable feast for the ears". We now present this work unanimously appreciated in a very pleasant format for the singer, with naturally the horn part in E and that, transposed, in F.
