The V 402 is Neumann's first microphone preamp since the launch in the 1980s of the legendary V 476b, still widely used and much appreciated in many professional studios. As technology has since advanced, Neumann has continued its quest for the best performing preamp for Neumann microphones and other high-quality studio models. Neumann microphones, current and old, have always aimed for the perfect sound. The V 402 preamplifier is therefore designed to preserve the entire sound image of the microphone. Regardless of the gain setting, nothing is added or removed. Perfection cannot be corrected!
The Neumann V 402 is designed to achieve the highest degree of linearity and sonic purity. It amplifies the microphone signal without unwanted coloration or sound artifacts, such as noise and distortion. Nowadays, even inexpensive preamps claim to be "linear" and "neutral", but they often lack finesse and sound details; the output signal sounds “dull” and “dull”, especially at the highest gain settings. It took meticulous engineering, rigorous measurements and extensive listening tests to create a preamplifier worthy of the Neumann name. The V 402 retains all the details of the original signal, leaving its true colors to shine.
The DI inputs are also synonymous with purity of sound and capture the sound of electric guitars and basses as well as that of other instruments without coloring or loss of detail. Sophisticated circuits and a very high input impedance ensure brilliant sound without audible noise. A switchable 20 dB attenuator allows the V 402 to be used with high level sources up to 28 dBu without distortion. The high pass function has been carefully developed to eliminate unwanted noise and rumble without degrading the signal
