After the first sketches were thrown on paper in 1815, it was not until 1824 that the last completed Beethoven symphony was concluded. With its extended Finale, in which the soloists and choir intervene with their call to fraternity, to form a bridge with the symphonic cantata, it presents a rupture whose effect was strongly felt in the history of the symphony throughout the Nineteenth century. The main theme of Friedrich Schiller's Ode "An die Freude" has become one of the most popular melodies in all classical music and today constitutes the European Anthem. Based on the musical text of the complete edition of Beethoven's works and accompanied by a new preface, this very recent edition reports on the current state of Beethoven research. With this study edition, this text is now accessible to everyone at low cost and in a handy format.
