The SSL 4000 E Channel Strip is used on individual tracks (vocals, drums, guitars, synths) to shape tonal balance, control dynamics, and clean the spectrum. The SSL 4000 G Bus Compressor is applied on a bus (drums bus, music bus) or on the master to add cohesion, punch, and stability, without sacrificing transparency when settings are properly dialed in.
The SSL 4000 E Channel Strip aims for a precise reproduction of the sound, signal path, and workflow of the original console channel strip. It includes detailed modeling of the Jensen input transformers and the dbx "Gold-Can" VCA output section, to recapture the dynamic grain and "presence" feel typical of recordings made through SSL 4000 consoles.
The equalizer offers selectable behaviors: the version with brown potentiometer knobs for a smoother, more musical filter progression, or the version with black potentiometer knobs for more precise filtering. The Dynamics section includes a compressor and an expander, useful for controlling transients, stabilizing vocals, or restoring attack to a snare while keeping the mix clear.
For advanced control, the filters and equalizer can be placed before the dynamics in the signal path or used in their sidechain. This allows, for example, compressing with less response to bass frequencies or targeting a specific frequency range to achieve more musical dynamics.
The SSL 4000 G Bus Compressor is a bus and summing compressor based on the integrated compressor of the analog SSL G-Series consoles from the 1980s. Its role is clear: to bring cohesion and punch to the mix while maintaining a sense of transparency when gain reduction is moderate.
It offers a comprehensive set of parameters for precise compression tweaking, including the highly appreciated Auto-Release function and manual control of the release time. The sidechain features a high-pass filter to avoid pumping effects triggered by overly dominant bass frequencies, an essential asset for modern mixes. Finally, the Auto Fade function uses SSL's own curves, with fade times ranging from 1 to 60 seconds, useful for automating song endings or transitions cleanly and progressively.
