Even though the Area 33 SDX is arguably the most comprehensive metal drum library ever recorded, the Thordendal/Bergstrand/Margarit team felt it had barely scratched the surface. They had to go back to the roots, to the beginning. In this sequel, they catapult themselves into formative years where heavy metal as we know it was still in its cradle. From there, they progress to where the first SDX recovers. Welcome to the sequel that begins before the start of the first: Area 33 – Origin SDX.
For this SDX, the team returned to Fredrik Thordendal's home studio 33 in Stockholm, Sweden. In total, five kits were recorded, each representing an essential branch of the lineage of classic hard rock and heavy metal from the late 1960s to the 1980s. But that's not all. With two tom configurations recorded for each kit – one open and one damped – this SDX covers all the blind spots in between, giving you the raw material to shape genre-transcending drum mixes, from crashing and thunderous to muffled , tight and lively drums for all styles. On top of that, the kits were captured using what is far beyond traditional microphones. Each setup was recorded using the classic close-mic technique but, in addition, with an additional set of microphones at each position. This means that each drum and cymbal is represented by both a mono mic and a pair of stereo microphones, allowing you to sculpt sounds beyond what you thought possible.
Additionally, to capture the stellar character of the 33 drum rooms, 11 ambient microphones (seven of which are stereo) were recorded. Finally, the kits selected for this project aren't just any run-of-the-mill drum kits: they're all rare, vintage gems, practically breathtaking in every sense of the word. All combined, this SDX is unique in every way – from drum selection, to microphone channels, to ambience flexibility and overall sound.
