Liszt's piano rhapsodies belong to the tradition of her operatic transcriptions or lieder themes, while using folk dances and songs as a basic material. Completed in 1864, the Spanish Rhapsody is a late reminiscence of Liszt's long journey to Spain and Portugal in 1844/45. Based on two popular dance songs of Iberian tradition, the Folia and the Jota, Liszt lights here a fireworks of characteristic rhythms and timbres, provided with a virtuoso conclusion played in a presto tempo. The autograph of this composition, long inaccessible, is now visible again - which provides an opportunity for Éditions G. Henle to review its urtext edition.
