The V12 reeds are cut from reed tubes with a diameter equivalent to that used for the alto saxophone reeds. As a result, they are thicker at both ends than traditional reeds. They vibrate on a longer palette and provide a rich, deep sound. The thickest part gives body to the attack and also increases the longevity of the reed. By comparison, a reed of strength 3 is roughly equivalent to a traditional reed of strength 2.5.
