Lemoine CANAT DE CHIZY E. - EN BLEU ET OR - ALTO, PIANO

Descripción

This piece is part of my ongoing reflection on the relationship between painting and music, begun with Nicolas de Staël in my viola concerto "Les Rayons du jour" and continued with Turner. The title is indeed taken from a painting by Whistler, "Nocturne in Blue and Gold: Southampton Bay," one of his series of "Nocturnes" that Debussy particularly admired. The allusion to Debussy is intentional here, the composition of this painting ("A nocturne is above all an arrangement of lines, shapes, and colors," said Whistler) corresponding to the freedom of form in Debussy's work, a freedom of which we are the fortunate heirs. Furthermore, my compositional work being particularly focused on the expression of movement, I wanted to address here its antidote: stillness, silence, inner peace, admirably evoked in this painting, a stillness within which movement is reborn, first fleetingly, then brilliantly. Hence the mirrored structure of this piece, moving from stillness to movement and from movement back to stillness. Edith Canat de Chizy
