Descrizione

The Chandler Limited RS124 compressor is a reissue of one of the most sought-after tube compressors of all time, the legendary EMI/Abbey Road RS124, adapted for the needs of modern studios. The Abbey Road RS124 compressor is among the most desirable and mysterious pieces of equipment developed for recording, and was designed in 1960 by Abbey Road technical director Bill Livy, assistant conductor Len Page, and veteran audio designer Mike Bachelor. The RS124 compressor was born from the underperformance of the Altec 436B purchased by EMI in the late 1950s for Abbey Road. The RS124 is directly associated with the Beatles' recordings at Abbey Road Studios. It was present on every Beatles session and has left its remarkable sonic signature across much of the EMI catalog.

The RS124 has an undeniable smoothness and is prized for its ability to tame transients without muffling the sound, even at very high compression levels. It quickly became popular with Abbey Road Studios engineers and was used extensively at these historic studios for recording, bus compression, mixing, and mastering. It was such an integral part of the recording and mixing process that a pair of RS124s can be seen in the vast majority of photos of Abbey Road booths in the 1960s. The RS124 compressor was manufactured for use at Abbey Road and was never available for sale. Over the years, some have attempted to recreate this holy grail of tube compressors based on incomplete information and guesswork, never managing to capture the elusive RS124 in all its glory. The schematics only tell part of the story. To truly understand the true nature of the Abbey Road RS124 compressor and the variations from one unit to the next, it was necessary to have access to the historic machines at Abbey Road Studios and analyze the hand-noted modifications.
