Born in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, Yamandu Costa started playing the guitar at the age of 7 with his father Algacir Costa, leader of the musical group “Os Fronteiriços” (The Frontiersmen). He then perfected his skills with Lucio Yanel, an Argentinian virtuoso living in Brazil. Until the age of 15, his only school was the South of Brazil and his regional music, Argentina and Uruguay.
After listening to Radamés Gnatalli, he became interested in Brazilian musicians like Baden Powel, Tom Jobim and Raphael Rabello, among others.
All his interpretations seem to reinvent music. Thanks to the intimacy he creates with his guitar, a kind of magic penetrates his soul and almost brings about a miracle. All the marks of recognition he receives reflect his very good relationship with the public. Yamandu plays "choro" (the classic samba of the 20s), "bossa nova" and is passionate about all music. He is also a “gaucho” who likes “milongas”, tangos, “zambas” and “chamamés” and still other rhythms which are part of his regional culture. Guitarist and composer who does not belong to any musical current, he is a mixture of all these styles, creating at the same time by his astonishing personality and his 7-string guitar, his own style.
Beyond his conquest of Brazil, Yamandu Costa tours all over the world. He has already shared his musicality, among others, with renowned artists such as Bob McFerrin, Melody Gardot, Richard Galliano, Stefano Bollani, Daniel Mille, Sylvain Luc, Alfredo Rodriguez, Antonio Zambujo, Pepe Romero, etc.
