The TG Type L microphone, developed by Chandler Limited and produced by EMI Abbey Road Studios, is a large-diaphragm, phantom-powered cardioid condenser microphone. As its name suggests, the Type L is derived from the innovative TG microphone. The TG Type L microphone inherits the main circuit, capsule, and Dual Tone system of the larger TG microphone. However, the similarities end there. In addition to the TG microphone, the Type L is tuned to deliver its own unique sound and voicings.
The Type L's Dual Tone system offers two distinct characteristics in a single microphone, "A" and "B," and modifies the input stage, increasing the microphone's versatility and allowing it to adapt to a wider range of sources. The "A" system is an advanced midrange TG microphone rich in harmonics, while the "B" system is a ribbon-like sound with a sharper contrast. Aside from the tonal differences of the Dual Tone system, the Type L was designed to handle sensitive and high-SPL sources. With the PAD engaged, both the "A" and "B" systems are capable of handling loud sources; however, the "B" setting with the PAD engaged is considered the Type L's extreme SPL mode.
