Composed in 1803, the 3rd Symphony of Beethoven was to be, as everyone knows, originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte. It appeared three years later, but with a dedication to Prince Lobkowitz, patron of Beethoven, and the following notice: "Sinfonia Eroica" in memory of a "great Uomo", which was now probably (the political situation had changed ) the Prince of Prussia Louis Ferdinand, fallen on the field of battle against Napoleon. Based on the musical text of the complete edition of Beethoven's works and with a preface by the publisher Bathia Churgin, Beethoven's famous Heroic Symphony is now also available from Henle in a pocket score.
