"One hundred and ninety years ago, on November 6th, my great, great, great grandfather, my grandmother, and their two children arrived in New York from Germany. They came to America in search of opportunity and freedom. They first settled at 196 Hudson Street and opened the first Martin guitar workshop in the New World. I was looking for a way to celebrate this important milestone. In 1976 (the anniversary year of our nation's founding), we launched the D-19. It was designed as a high-end D-18. We stained the soundboard to use spruce that had aesthetic issues. This was an early nod to sustainability. I thought it would be fitting to dust off this model designation and build 190 contemporary D-19s to honor our 190th anniversary. This model also aligns with a sustainable development approach by using Adirondack spruce tops with aesthetic defects, which we had in stock for some time. We ran them through our Mimaki printer to achieve a figured mahogany look for the top. I hope you enjoy it." - C.F. Martin IV
