Behringer CAT

Description

Essential Information About the BEHRINGER CAT Synthesizer

  • Analog synthesizer inspired by the legendary "CAT SRM II," featuring a 100% analog signal path (VCO, VCF, VCA).
  • Dual VCO and duo/paraphonic mode for massive bass lines, sharp leads, and two-voice textures.
  • 4 mixable waveforms (including sub-octave) + white noise and dedicated LFO for a very wide sonic palette.
  • Eurorack-compatible format, CV/Gate inputs, and full USB/MIDI with polychain capability up to 16 voices.

An Analog Tribute with a Strong Character

The BEHRINGER CAT follows the lineage of compact analog synths with a sharp and expressive sound. It captures the spirit and architecture of the "CAT SRM II" with a circuit reproduction claimed to be authentic, based on matched transistors and JFETs, to recapture the grain and response of a classic. Within the Behringer range, it targets musicians who want a true analog engine, immediate and performance-oriented, without navigating menus.

Who Is the BEHRINGER CAT For, and Which Styles Suit It?

This synth is aimed at keyboardists and sound designers from beginner to advanced levels seeking a direct instrument, rich in modulation and very "live friendly." Ideal for techno, electro, synthwave, EBM, acid, ambient, and pop, it also excels in the studio for layering takes, creating drones, or sculpting FX. Thanks to the audio input and external control connections, it also becomes an excellent partner for a modular or semi-modular setup.

Features and Innovations

The engine is based on analog subtractive synthesis with two VCOs and a Duophonic/Paraphonic mode allowing independent control of both oscillators. The oscillators offer 4 variable and simultaneous waveforms (Sawtooth, Triangle, Modulated Pulse, and Sub-Octave Square) to build a dense timbre, from smooth to aggressive, complemented by a white noise generator to thicken or texture the sound.

The filter section features a classic low-pass design with peak/resonance and self-oscillation capability, perfect for expressive sweeps. On the modulation side, both oscillators and the filter can be modulated from 6 different sources with 2 depth attenuators, while an analog LFO (sine/square) and 2 envelope generators provide precise animation of the VCF and VCA. Going further, the audio input allows processing external sources, and the Poly Chain 16-voice feature enables chaining multiple units to reach up to 16 voices of polyphony.

Designed for hands-on control, the CAT features 47 controls offering real-time access to parameters. Connectivity is comprehensive with USB/MIDI (MIDI channel selection and voice priority), multiple audio outputs, and a set of control inputs/outputs for easy integration into a Eurorack system or CV/Gate setup.
