Légère, engineering at the service of musicians. If Légère reeds are considered true technological masterpieces, it is because they result from the collaboration of two scientists. Guy Légère, a chemist (PhD from McGill University) and clarinetist, and Mark Kortschot, a specialist in composite materials (PhD from the University of Cambridge), worked together to find and develop the material best suited to offer optimal longevity and acoustic qualities. Légère reeds are the fruit of this collaboration that has continued since 1998.
Légère reeds are made from polypropylene. This non-toxic material has been approved for direct contact with food, making these reeds completely safe to use. Légère has adopted a special process, aligning the molecules of the material to precisely adjust rigidity and density, to be as close as possible to the traditional cane reed. Légère adds no fiberglass or any other chemical product.
Characteristics of this material: - It does not need to be pre-conditioned before playing - It does not absorb water - It is non-toxic - It can be disinfected - It is extremely durable over time.
Of course, the most important aspect of these reeds is the sound. Even with a very refined ear, you would not be able to distinguish a traditional reed from a Légère synthetic reed, even on the stage of a major Philharmonic Orchestra.
