Keeley BUBBLE TRON FLANGER/PHASER

Description

Essential Information About the BUBBLE TRON Pedal

  • Dynamic modulation : an effect that responds to your attack and playing style for more lively movements than a classic flanger/phaser
  • Two immediate flavors with Vintage and Modern modes to switch from warm modulation to a sharper response
  • Two A/B banks selectable via internal switches to adapt the adjustment range to your guitar, amp, or style
  • Pedalboard friendly format : compact metal housing (112 x 60 x 31 mm) and 9V power supply (power adapter not included)

"Old-school" modulation... with a modern playing approach

The BUBBLE TRON belongs to the family of modulations that do not simply oscillate regularly: here, the effect is dynamic, meaning it follows the intensity of your signal. This philosophy recalls the spirit of expressive pedals that "breathe" with the musician, especially when alternating fingerpicking, light pick attacks, strong strikes, and volume nuances.

With its two Vintage and Modern modes, it offers two interpretations of the same universe: on one side, a more organic, rounder modulation; on the other, a clearer, more present response, ideal for standing out in a dense mix. The A/B banks, accessible via internal switches, reinforce this customization logic by allowing you to orient the pedal towards behavior closer to your setup (single-coil or humbucker pickups, bright clean or crunch, etc.).

Who is the BUBBLE TRON for, and in which styles does it make a difference?

The BUBBLE TRON is aimed both at guitarists looking for an inspiring modulation pedal and at stage musicians wanting an expressive effect without multiplying settings. Thanks to its dynamic character, it can be very intuitive: you play softly, the effect remains subtle; you emphasize, the modulation opens up and becomes more spectacular.

In funk and neo-soul, it adds movement to muted strums and chords, with a very musical "elastic" feel. In rock and indie, it provides immediate width and relief to riffs, especially when alternating airy verses and more intense choruses. In ambient and post-rock, its reactive side allows creating modulated soundscapes that evolve naturally according to playing intensity, without necessarily relying on a fixed modulation speed.

Regarding context, it fits both in the studio (to double a track, texture an arpeggio, thicken a clean tone) and live (to highlight a passage without changing pedals). Its compact format and metal housing make it easy to integrate into a performance-oriented pedalboard.

Modes, banks, and tuning philosophy

The pedal offers two modes : Vintage and Modern. The idea is not just to "color" differently but to provide two behaviors: a softer, more characterful modulation on one side, a more direct and assertive response on the other. This is especially useful when switching from a clean sound to a more driven one: the Vintage mode can flatter harmonics and smooth the high end, while the Modern mode helps maintain definition.

Additionally, the BUBBLE TRON includes two A/B banks, accessible via internal switches. Practically, this allows you to adapt the effect to your context without changing pedals: for example, one bank optimized for very percussive attacks and another for more legato playing, or one bank favoring subtler modulation and another more pronounced. It's a simple and effective approach to "dial in" the pedal to your guitar and avoid the effect being too overwhelming or, conversely, too subtle.

Sound signature

The BUBBLE TRON's sonic signature is distinguished by a modulation that follows the right hand (and even the left hand if you play with volume or attack). Where a traditional flanger or phaser can sometimes feel mechanical, the dynamic aspect brings a more organic impression: the effect seems to trigger, widen, or tighten depending on your musical intention.

In Vintage mode, expect a warmer texture, often perceived as rounder and more blended into the sound, ideal for chords and arpeggios where you want movement without aggressiveness. In Modern mode, the modulation gains presence: it's the right choice for parts that need to remain clear or to highlight rhythmic patterns in a busy mix.

The dynamic character makes the pedal particularly enjoyable with a clean or edge of breakup tone: you get sensitive modulation that doesn't mask your touch. With a more saturated sound, the BUBBLE TRON can become a true texture tool, adding a sense of width and movement while remaining controlled by your attack.

Use
If you want a solid, effective, and versatile modulation pedal, the Bubble Tron is made for you. Supposed to replicate the dynamic phaser and flanger of the Mutron used by Frank Zappa combined with a sample and hold filter, it is a superb tool to sculpt your sound with finesse. It seems that the dynamic flanger and phaser are quite rare. The advantage is that the effect intensity increases with the attack of the strings, so there is no constant "swoosh" behind like on usual phasers/flangers. Moreover, the flanger can do positive or negative feedback. The filter is not dynamic but the knob at the bottom left allows you to adjust the waveform type (sawtooth or random). The big plus is that what I just described is mode 1 (filter, dynamic phaser, and dynamic flanger) but by opening the pedal you can use mode 2 which includes an envelope filter, a classic phaser, and flanger (non-dynamic). It's a pity you can't change the mode without opening the pedal. Finally, there is another small switch inside for vintage or modern voicing. Personally, it doesn't bother me because I mainly use mode 1 (that's the point of having dynamic phaser/flanger) in modern voicing. A bit of time to understand the settings if you are a beginner but basically, it's not very complicated. It's a solid, reliable, very versatile pedal while having quite simple settings in the end. It's honestly my favorite pedal, quite simply.... (Show more)
