It's closed-back, and therefore especially suitable for microphone recording to avoid bleed. Otherwise, for mixing, there is way too much bass, and although the packaging says there are no exaggerated frequencies, that's not true. However, there is indeed good frequency separation, but to have a neutral sound, you need to either adjust your monitors' settings or use a software equalizer. I invested in HD7s as a complement, much closer to my monitors in terms of balance.
