The Catalinbread SFT was born from a simple idea: to capture the feel of a big AMPEG amp pushed just right, with that full low-midrange, the bounce in the attack, and that very "organic" way it opens up under the pick. The nod is intentional: the SFT bridges a vintage tone reminiscent of "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" and more modern, thick, desert-like sounds typical of stoner rock.
Beyond the musical reference, the inspiration also comes from AMPEG's historical approach: a very "hi-fi" philosophy in design, with Baxandall-style (Bass/Treble) EQ and a pursuit of clarity, sustain, and musicality. The result: a pedal that doesn't just add gain but rebuilds a true amp foundation under your fingers, ideal for crafting a stage or studio sound.
The SFT is aimed at guitarists (and bassists) who want a reliable and expressive sonic foundation : a thickened clean tone, a credible edge of breakup, a dense-grained crunch, or heavier saturation bordering on fuzz. It suits both intermediate players seeking a "good sound right away" and experienced players who sculpt their drive with guitar volume and right-hand attack.
Style-wise, it excels in rock, classic rock, blues rock, garage, stoner, and anything that demands substance in the low-midrange without losing articulation. On a pedalboard, it can serve as an "always-on" to thicken a tame amp or, conversely, as a second gain stage to densify a more transparent overdrive.
The Catalinbread SFT gets straight to the point with a clear interface: Volume for output level, Gain for saturation amount, and a Baxandall-style Bass / Treble EQ, particularly effective for adjusting low-end firmness and presence without harshness. This EQ is a real asset: it allows you to go from a tight, percussive sound to a wider, more "wooly" wall of tone without any harsh filtering sensation.
The core concept is the Stones / Stoner selector. In Stones mode, you get the feel of an amp starting to work: dynamic, very touch-sensitive, perfect for moving from a muscular clean to crunch just by playing harder or rolling back the guitar volume. In Stoner mode, the pedal shifts to a thicker, heavier, and wilder saturation, ideal for heavy riffs, monolithic lines, and textures that verge on fuzz.
Finally, the accepted power supply range of 9 to 18V DC allows you to tailor the feel: at 18V, the SFT gains headroom and definition (very useful if you stack drives or play loud in low tuning); at 9V, the response can feel softer and more "spongy."
The SFT stands out with a full and solid signature, featuring a low-midrange that fills the space and immediately gives the impression of a bigger amp. The grain isn't "sharp": it's rather round, lively when attacked, and very pleasant for rhythms that need to stay wide without becoming muddy. The Baxandall EQ helps quickly find the right balance between tight lows (for defined palm mutes) and massive lows (for stoner textures), while maintaining air and presence through the Treble.
In Stones mode, the pedal shines with its responsiveness : you feel the natural transition between clean, edge of breakup, and crunch. In Stoner mode, the saturation becomes thicker, grittier, perfect for heavy riffs and singing leads without needing excess treble. In both cases, the SFT behaves like a true "foundation": it handles boosts, fuzzes placed before it, and delays/reverbs placed after very well.
