An Alesis Classic That Shaped Generations of Producers

An essential reference in studios and on stages for decades, the SR-16 has made history among drum machines thanks to its simplicity, reliability, and sound quality. It stands as a cornerstone of the Alesis catalog, designed to last and be immediately operational, whether programming a beat in minutes or refining a complete arrangement.

Who Is It For? From Beginner Beatmakers to Experienced Composers

Ideal for hip-hop, electro, pop, synthwave, or film music, the SR-16 suits musicians who want to compose quickly without a computer, keyboardists in rehearsals, as well as live performers. Its clear workflow and dynamic pads facilitate rhythmic exploration, while MIDI sync allows integration into a larger setup.

Features and New Additions

The SR-16 relies on an expressive stereo sample engine to deliver crisp grooves, with a wide tempo range from 20 to 255 bpm. The 12 velocity-sensitive pads offer natural control over dynamics, and the two pedal inputs enable Start/Stop triggering or Count/A/B/Fill variations without taking your hands off the pads. The 50 "Preset" kits cover iconic acoustic and electronic drum sets, while 50 user kits let you sculpt your own sonic signature. On the integration side, MIDI Clock/Song Position Pointer synchronization ensures solid timing with your synths, sequencers, and workstations. Two pairs of stereo outputs facilitate mixing routings or separate processing on stage and in the studio. The large LCD screen makes editing and navigation quick and clear.

There are quite a few buttons, it stresses me out a bit but if I ignore all the superfluous stuff, actually the pre-recorded sounds and rhythms can be used directly without wasting time. And finally, a very important point for this price range, the pads are sensitive so you can nuance the hits.

Small hiccup, the tempo lacks a bit of precision for perfect synchronization with other instruments and Pro Tools. The drum side is very nice, much more classic rock than an Akai SR 20 which is too hip hop styled.
