Audio Technica AT2040

Description

The essentials to know about the Audio-Technica AT2040 microphone

  • Warm and natural "broadcast" sound thanks to its large diaphragm element, ideal for spoken voice.
  • Highly directional pickup to better isolate the voice and limit room noise (keyboards, ventilation, reverberation).
  • Built-in pop filter with multi-stage internal windshield for cleaner "p" and "b" sounds, even at close range.
  • Professional XLR format: perfect with an audio interface, preamp, or mixer for consistent streaming and voice-over performance.

A microphone designed for content creation, in the Audio-Technica spirit

The Audio-Technica AT2040 was designed to democratize professional broadcast-quality sound in an affordable microphone, without sacrificing durability or vocal clarity. Built around speech-focused capture, it naturally fits into a modern podcast, live streaming, or home studio setup, with a sonic signature that emphasizes listening comfort and intelligibility.

Podcasting, streaming, gaming, voice-over: who is the AT2040 for?

This microphone is aimed at creators who want a present and controlled voice, whether recording a podcast, launching a live stream, commentating a gaming session, or producing voice-overs. Its directionality helps reduce room contribution in the signal, making it easier to achieve a clean sound in untreated acoustic environments. It is also very practical for two-person recordings in the same room: by placing each microphone close to the speaker, bleed is minimized and clarity is improved in the mix.

Tight pickup and internal pop filter for a cleaner sound

Multi-stage internal windshield: better-controlled plosives

The AT2040 features a special internal windshield combining a foam mesh and a non-woven pop filter. The result: clearer diction and more stable vocal capture, especially useful when speaking close to the capsule to achieve a dense, "radio" sound.

Directional pickup: less unwanted noise, more focus

Combined with a pickup pattern designed to stay focused on the source, the AT2040's design helps reduce ambient noise around the microphone. This is a real advantage for desktop setups (keyboard, mouse) and reverberant rooms. With proper working distance and careful placement, you get a warm, classic voice that is easy to process (equalization, compression, de-essing).

I do not regret buying this one, time will tell but I think it will do the job. I use it to make 'cultural podcasts on SoundCloud'. When I switch to Audition, the spectrum is clean when I set my sound card to 10 o'clock, even though it sounds low, it's better to have an under-modulated sound than a saturated sound! In any case, I recommend it.
