The Radial McBoost is a microphone signal booster designed to increase the output level of a dynamic or ribbon microphone to drive any preamp with sufficient gain and clarity.
A boost for your microphone!
Vintage dynamic and ribbon microphones require high acoustic pressure and quality preamps with good gain headroom to faithfully reproduce the sound of the captured instrument. This is not always the case with all mixing consoles, whose preamps can sometimes be insufficient for demanding microphones such as the Shure SM7B or SM57, for example. Long cable runs also have a negative impact due to attenuation caused by the resistance of the cable conductors. To address these issues, Radial developed a microphone signal booster: the McBoost.
A multifunctional tool for varied setups.
The McBoost was developed to accomplish several tasks thanks to its high-level features. It can be used in the studio to increase the gain of a ribbon microphone, in a broadcast studio setup to achieve more clarity with demanding microphones such as the SM7B, or in field reporting where it is sometimes necessary to deploy several hundred meters of microphone cable. The McBoost’s exceptional performance is ensured by a Class A dual JFET transistor with phantom power, capable of producing up to 26 dB of gain without adding noise or artifacts.
Control your signal.
Since each microphone or situation requires a specific setting, Radial thought of everything by equipping the McBoost with various controls to handle all scenarios. It features a 3-position impedance selector to optimize frequency response depending on the equipment used, and a 3-position level selector (intermediate, full power, or variable, the latter allowing precise gain control via the gain potentiometer).
The McBoost is a high-performance microphone signal booster designed to raise the output level of a dynamic microphone to ensure better response. It also boosts the signal of a low-output microphone, particularly ribbon microphones, bringing it to a sufficient level to drive a mixing console or a preamp lacking gain. The McBoost’s Class A circuit, built around two calibrated and matched J-FET transistors, provides 25dB of gain without increasing noise level, coloring the sound, or adding artifacts! The metal chassis typical of Radial products offers exceptional protection to the components, making it suitable for live applications and touring. Very easy to use, simply place the McBoost between the microphone and the console, connect it via two XLR cables, and activate phantom power to power it! It features an impedance selector (600, 2.7K, and 30K Ohms) to optimize frequency response and a 3-position high-pass filter to reduce unwanted low frequencies. Versatile and robust, the McBoost allows you to open up the sound of your dynamic microphone and use it with long cable runs: essential for Broadcast or Live applications.
