Description

Essential Information About the Boss GX-100 Multi-Effects

  • A true "Swiss Army knife" for guitar and bass: AIRD amp modeling and a vast BOSS effects library to go from crystal-clear cleans to modern saturations.
  • Ultra-smooth editing thanks to the color touchscreen and front panel controls: adjust a patch, routing, or level in seconds, even during rehearsals.
  • Advanced routing: up to 15 simultaneous blocks, series/parallel chains, dual amp capability, and WAV format IR import to fine-tune the cabinet to your monitoring system.
  • Stage-ready: 8 footswitches, expression pedal with toe switch, plus extended control options (MIDI, footswitch, and external pedals).

A modern "GT" approach: BOSS AIRD technology in a pedalboard-friendly format

The GX-100 carries the DNA of BOSS performance-oriented processors: modeling designed to preserve the feel under the fingers, consistent dynamic response, and easy integration into very different rigs. The AIRD technology doesn't just mimic an EQ curve; it aims to reproduce the behavior of an amp in a real chain (attack, natural compression, interaction with effects). The result: a multi-effects unit that adjusts quickly but retains real depth when you want to dive into details (IR, parallel routings, dual amp, etc.).

For whom, for which styles, and in what contexts?

The Boss GX-100 targets musicians seeking a compact, robust, and versatile solution: from beginner guitarists looking for ready-to-play sounds to seasoned players building a preset per song with scene changes and assignments. In live settings, the footswitches and "Manual" mode allow you to regain the spirit of a traditional pedalboard (activating/deactivating blocks like pedals). In studio, it becomes a practical partner for USB recording, headphone work, and crafting reproducible tones.

Rock, pop, blues, funk, metal, ambient: the GX-100's strength is chaining very contrasting sounds without changing gear. It can be direct and efficient for precise rhythm parts, yet wide and textured for delay and reverb pads or more cinematic sounds.

Key features: creative routing, real amp integration, and real-time control

The heart of the GX-100 is its chain logic: up to 15 assignable blocks and series/parallel setups that facilitate modern rigs (signal splits, dual amps, "wet/dry" effects, etc.). You can use it directly into a FRFR speaker or front-of-house, but also integrate it with a traditional amp via a Send/Return loop (for example, using the four-cable method) to place some effects before the preamp and others in the loop.

On the control side, everything is designed for playing without fighting navigation: assignable switches, built-in expression pedal with toe switch, and MIDI IN/OUT compatibility to sync or control other devices. USB opens access to computer editing via BOSS Tone Studio, and the optional Bluetooth Audio MIDI Dual adapter enables wireless editing and streaming of backing audio depending on your setup.

Sound signature

The GX-100 delivers a very clear BOSS signature: precise attack, well-controlled low end, and a "clean" feel that helps maintain definition even with complex chains (compression, modulation, stereo delays, long reverbs). AIRD amps prioritize a dynamic response that follows your picking hand: lowering the guitar volume easily yields natural transitions between crunch and clean tones.

WAV IR import is a real plus for customizing tone: you can tighten the bass for modern metal, open the upper mids for rock rhythms, or soften the high end for more comfortable headphone playing. Transparent or boldly colored, the GX-100 becomes what you make of it: a neutral platform for your sounds or a character machine with distinctive effects and confident saturations.

As soon as received, immediately tried. A product of remarkable quality, condensed technology. I have owned some multi-effects, but despite the sales arguments, the sounds sounded rather "chemical," which led me back to the basics, Vox ac30 tube amp, and carefully chosen pedals... in short, proper analog. But here... this boss gx 100, what a punch!! I haven't yet taken the time to modify or create my own sounds, I've only gone through the factory presets, and already you feel a real dynamic, a warmth, a response to your playing. The nuances are really felt like on a full tube amp. In terms of use, without having opened the manual yet, you can clearly guess how easily each guitarist can sculpt the sound as they wish. Finally, the connections are very complete, and as a lazy person, and no pun intended, it's really great to show up at rehearsal with just your guitar and your gx 100... okay, well, you also need jacks... come on... that will be the only downside... lol...... Very robust all-metal multi-effect, very complete with basic effects. The emulations are good, the effects very decent. Even if I'm not a fan of distortions in general, they are usable. The overdrives are very decent. Only the pitch and octaver are not great and not of very good quality, like many other manufacturers in reality. Avoid trying to play chords with this kind of effect because it quickly becomes mush. Too bad. The touchscreen is a big plus on this multi-effect and proves to be very practical, you can't do without it once you've tried it. Very good mentions for the possibility of having parallel routing and being able to assign any effect parameters or even several at the same time to the switches. It's very flexible and effectively replaces snapshots which are absent from this multi-effect. In short, for the price, I think I haven't found better for a turnkey solution.... (Show more)

At first, I was planning to buy the Line 6 Helix Floor. But given the price of the beast for a product released in 2015, I quickly settled for the Boss GX-100, much cheaper and more modern (touchscreen and Bluetooth, with the purchase of a separately sold adapter). I'm amazed by the sound quality. I have 4 amps (Fender Twin Amp, Fender Twin Amp Reissue 57, Marshall JVM410H, and Vox AC15C1 for "at home"). It sounds good on each. Even on the small VOX that doesn't have an effects loop, provided the pedalboard is connected to the normal channel. The presets often require readjustments, but that's only natural. On that note, mastering the device doesn't happen in one evening, nor even in a weekend, but once you master it, the possibilities seem endless. So: excellent product with an unmatched quality/price ratio to this day.... (Show more)

Bought in January 2023, so for more than 1 and a half years, I am very happy with it. Since the second update, the ergonomics have become really very good. The sounds suit me, spending a little time, you can really make very good things and that in many styles. I use it on the Power In input of a Katana 100 (so without the configured CAB) or on the clean channel of a Fender Champion 40, with the CABs this time. And it is solid. I recently bought the BT adapter (well, you have to buy it separately, it's annoying), practical in rehearsal, tricky to connect to the BOSS config, but very easy to play music from my smartphone on the amp. And that is simple, fast and ultimately useful.

Impressive. In one week I haven't explored everything yet... but it's promising! Moreover, whatever the combination, there is no background noise or hiss.
