Description

In November 1778, Mozart was in Mannheim where he sketched a second oboe concerto in F major, one year after completing his first, the C major concerto KV 314 dating from early '77, the only one that, unfortunately, has come down to us in its entirety. Nothing is known about the genesis of this concerto, nor the reason why the composer only completed the initial tutti and the beginning of the solo, but it is very likely that it is linked to his meeting with Friedrich Ramm, as evidenced by his correspondence to his father dated December 4, 1777, "an oboist who plays very well and has a very pure sound." Mozart would compose the quartet KV 370 for him in 1781. In contrast to the oboe, sopranos have a repertoire of dazzling richness with the composer, often with a treatment of the voice of a virtuosity reminiscent of that of instruments playing in the same register. It was therefore very tempting to construct a concerto with two arias in F major, KV 538 "Ah se il ciel, begnine stelle" and KV 638 "Ma que vi fece" without the initial recitative. These two arias are offered here with the original part and a slightly ornamented version for a more purely instrumental rendering. As a second movement, I used the Andante for flute and orchestra KV 315, originally in C major, which I lowered by a tone for a classical relation F-B flat, -F. For the oboe, it is a new opportunity to move in this music of magical purity and ever-renewed vitality!
