Con leggerezza results from a commission by the Ensemble InterContemporain in 2004. After having written Le sette chiese for this ensemble, a work inspired by Renaissance architecture, I wanted to use the EIC in a different musical register, far from the contemplative atmosphere of this first attempt for large ensemble. Con leggerezza is intended for a spatially dispersed formation (5 ensembles of 5 musicians), but allowing effects of continuity through relays between instruments common to several groups. The general path of the instruments, when scanning the stage from left to right, goes from the high register to the low register. The form of Con Leggerezza is eminently rhapsodic, with musical ideas giving birth to each other either by process or by development. The work begins in an elusive way, as if the material being heard were incomplete, or rather nascent. The material gradually comes to life, then exploits the dimension of space, first moving from one group to another, then playing on echo phenomena at variable speeds. The accumulation of events due to this echo phenomenon gives rise to a periodicity, an ostinato in the medium-low register on which an unstable discourse is grafted (notably false rhythmic pulses). After the disintegration of this ostinato, a new musical idea appears, still lively, first in the high register, then progressively, during a rotary path, towards the low end of the spectrum. Time is then completely smooth, insofar as any notion of pulse has disappeared, and it is only a slow ostinato that will break the accumulation of virtuosic materials. After a passage conferred to the three clarinets in relay, a true passacaglia, this time based on a regular pulse, will appear, itself giving rise to a transition in the low register, again supporting echoes in the high register. The piece could end here, having already explored several types of dialectics (regular - irregular, fixed space - moving space, ostinato - continuous discourse...). Yet, although nothing allows one to guess it, the solo bass clarinet, on repeated notes at high dynamics, allows the discourse to come back to life, which will find resolution only in a return of the initial sequence, itself resolving into a grand tutti then into a bass clarinet cadenza accompanied by the high instruments which will serve as a coda. It was impossible for me to predetermine the form of Con leggerezza: the discourse built itself almost alone, without my knowledge, during the work on the musical material. On a poetic level, this fantasy is inspired by the lightness of Champagne bubbles, and, because it gives a large place to noise, could have borne the subtitle: "may an impure sound water our furrows."
