From 1970s classic rock to funk to metal, the Talk Box is an effect that has crossed styles and eras by producing sounds that are completely different from classic effects pedals: the sound of the guitar or synthesizer enters the pedal and is amplified in a mini speaker that is hermetically sealed to a flexible tube. The other end of the tube is placed in the mouth of the musician who can then modulate the sound. From then on, the possibilities become infinite: articulate words to speak to the public, double a chorus, have a robotic voice, obtain wah-wah sounds without limit of filter or speed, everything is possible. The Talk Box is an electric guitar effect that gives the impression of making your guitar talk. It is connected between the guitar and the amp. The talk box is composed of an amplifier stage and a speaker. It amplifies the signal of the guitar, but the speaker plays the role of a diaphragm which "pushes" the air in a pipe. The outlet of the pipe is placed near the mouth of the guitarist. The expelled air vibrates at the frequency of the note being played. When you speak near the pipe, your voice is modulated by the note played, everything you say is then "sung" by the guitar. This is the principle of the Vocoder applied to the guitar.
It is necessary to use a
vocal microphone and a sound system to amplify and broadcast the result. A dedicated parallel output allows you to continue sending the guitar signal to your usual amp for use when the talk box is not on. This is the effect used to give a human voice to your instrument.
