The StageBug SB-2 was designed to meet a simple reality: when chaining rehearsals, gigs, and travel, you want a direct box that is robust, simple, and ready to serve in all circumstances. Radial has therefore concentrated the essentials of its expertise into a minimalist format, continuing the approach that made the brand famous while targeting mobile use. The result: a compact DI that maintains a philosophy of performance and durability, without any unnecessary features.
The Radial SB-2 is aimed at bassists, keyboardists, acoustic/electric guitarists, and all musicians using electronic instruments, pedalboards, or audio sources that need to feed a mixing console cleanly. It excels when traveling light, arriving on an unfamiliar stage, and delivering a clean signal in seconds: one instrument input, an XLR output to the front of house, and a thru output to keep an amp on stage.
It is also very well suited for current keyboards and digital pianos, which often can deliver a high output level. Where some "consumer" active DIs might saturate, the passive design of the SB-2 provides a comfortable headroom, and the -15 dB pad offers extra safety when the source is particularly hot.
At the heart of the SB-2 is a Eclipse ET-DB3 transformer designed by Radial. It ensures impedance conversion and balancing of the signal for reliable transmission to the console, even over long cable runs. Sonically, it contributes to a smooth and warm reproduction, with slight natural compression reminiscent of certain vintage gear, particularly appreciated on bass or keyboard.
Active basses, some onboard preamps, or line outputs of modern keyboards can push levels high. The -15 dB pad prevents input overload and maintains a controlled signal, easier to manage on the console side. In practice, this reduces the risk of unwanted distortion and speeds up soundchecks, especially when sharing a bill or needing quick adaptation.
Need to connect a stereo keyboard or a stereo source (like a computer) without reconfiguring all outputs? The SB-2 includes a Merge function that allows stereo summing to mono. Simply use the main input and the thru output to feed both signals: the SB-2 handles the merging, handy on stages where only one line is available to the front of house.
Buzz and hum caused by ground loops are classic live issues. The transformer helps isolate input from output, and a ground lift (lifting pin 1 on the XLR connector) complements the toolkit to achieve a quiet, professional result. The phase reverse switch is also there to quickly resolve phase conflicts, for example when combining an onstage amp via the thru output and a direct signal sent to the console.
The SB-2 was designed as a touring tool: its shielded steel chassis and characteristic protective coating safeguard the electronics, while the connectors withstand repeated plugging. It's typically the kind of DI you leave on a pedalboard, in a gig bag pocket, or a case, ready to jump in at any moment without a second thought.
