Boosey & Hawkes PROKOFIEV SERGE - VISIONS FUGITIVES OP.22 PIANO

Description

Between the publications of the second and third piano sonatas (1912-1917), Prokofiev wrote a large number of works for a wide variety of instruments, such as the Visions fugitives, the ballets Chout and The Gambler, the Classical Symphony, the first violin concerto, the second piano concerto, and several songs. It was an extraordinarily productive period, during which his obsession with using strong, polytonal, and colorful sounds reached its peak, although in this respect the Classical Symphony is an exception. The Visions fugitives are less diatonic than any of his piano sonatas, although their style approaches the harmonic subtlety of Symphony No. 5 (1923). Prokofiev's composition process usually involves spontaneous sketches, which prove useful later. The method of immediate inspiration seems to have allowed the composer to create a series of finished miniatures, perfectly organized and coherent, which when played together form a logical whole. The ease and transparency of the movements allow us insight into the interpretation of Prokofiev's music. Studying his shorter works helps us understand the importance of clarity and rhythmic discipline when performing them. The necessity of these qualities is particularly evident in the Visions fugitives.
