"The farewell. Vienna, May 4, 1809, the day of the departure of his imperial highness the revered archduke Rodolphe. Beethoven wrote these words on the manuscript of this sonata entitled "The Farewells", which today counts among his most popular piano works. The first movement of the sonata probably lives the day just before the Archduke's flight from Vienna. To avoid the invasion and conquest of the French troops, Rodolphe and other members of the royal family had fled to Hungary. When he returned in January 1810, Beethoven was able to give him the whole sonata, because after the "Farewell", the composer had completed the "Absence" and the "Return".
