Description

Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Sonata No. 22 in F major op. 54

Norbert Gertsch (Publisher)

Murray Perahia (Publisher, Fingers)

Urtext Edition, paperbound

revised edition

Framed by the two famous Waldstein Sonatas op. 53 and Appassionata op. 57, the Sonata in F major op. 54 has always lived in their shadow. And that's a shame! In this first great sonata in two movements, Beethoven experimented by resorting to strong contrasts of character in the first movement and to a virtuoso duet in perpetuum mobile in the second movement. The sonata thus requires from the pianists - in the interpretation as in the mastery of the technical difficulties - a high requirement, which is perhaps also a reason for its setting aside. On one point, this sonata shares the fate of many early works of Beethoven: the autograph manuscript is missing. This is why Murray Perahia and Norbert Gertsch can only use, in their new edition, an original edition as a source. As always for Henle's new Beethoven sonatas, Maestro Perahia is also the author of the fingerings - as well as a personal text on the meaning of this sonata.
