Next to the Chaconne for violin (HN 557) and the ten organ chorale preludes (HN 1293), the Prelude and Fugue in D major is one of the most famous piano transcriptions that Busoni has made with JS Bach. There are many indications that he thought he had these three works for exemplary achievements in his transcription technique. Busoni states, in the title of Prelude and Fugue, that it intends to be played as a "concert piece", and this indicates the high level of technical requirements required here. And in fact, Busoni expects the pianist a perfect mastery of his keyboard, with the goal of transposing the powerful sound machinery of the organ to the piano, while respecting the spirit of Bach. It is to all the pianists wishing to finally make resound together all the games of the organ that is recommended most warmly this edition urtext.
