Waves CLA-2A is a compressor / limiter plugin designed to provide stable, musical, and flattering dynamics typical of optical tube processing. It excels when you want to wrap a track in silky compression without squashing it: more present lead vocals, smoother bass, denser guitars, and more "finished" acoustic instruments. In mixing and pre-mastering, it helps place a source in the mix with a warm grain while maintaining definition and intelligibility.
The CLA-2A replicates the behavior of a famous electro-optical compressor known for its natural compression, even with significant gain reduction. The attack is forgiving enough to smooth peaks while allowing articulation (consonants, pick attacks, useful transients) to pass through. The release, which slows down progressively, offers a smoother and less "pumped" decay, ideal for tracks that need to remain stable and elegant.
Depending on your goal, you can work in Compress mode to round and balance, or in Limit mode for firmer control, often useful to increase sustain on bass, slide guitar, pads, or certain instrument buses. This duality allows quick switching from leveling treatment to tighter dynamics without complicating routing.
The core workflow relies on a few controls: set the amount of reduction via Peak Reduction, then compensate with Gain. This approach encourages quick and musical decisions, especially on vocals: you find the point where the track sits in the mix, gains presence, and feels closer without becoming aggressive.
The CLA-2A is sought after for its warmth, but its strength lies in preserving clarity. The harmonics added by the tube emulation can give a sense of density and "glue" in the mix while maintaining the readability of important elements. Pushing gain reduction further yields more punch and presence, useful for reinforcing a chorus, a picked bass, or a vocal that needs to stay upfront.
To adapt to current methods, the plugin includes a MIX control for parallel compression directly within the instance, as well as a TRIM for quick level adjustment without breaking your gain staging. The sidechain allows compression to react to another source (e.g., kick to bass), and a frequency filter helps target behavior, notably to tame highs or prevent overly bright areas from triggering excessive compression.
You can choose a completely clean output or enable subtle hiss and hum to regain a more "hardware" feel. This option is useful when you want to add some life to a track that's too sterile while maintaining control over noise level depending on the context (studio, podcast, live, post-production).
Supervised by Chris Lord-Alge, the CLA-2A offers presets designed as starting points for vocals, guitar, bass, drums, and other common sources. Finally, zero latency facilitates use both in the studio and in real-time mixing situations, depending on your setup.
