Waves MultiMod Rack is a plug-in designed to transform a sound source by adding character, density, and movement, with a multiband approach tailored for current production. It targets both solo performers who want to thicken a vocal, guitar, or synth, and busier productions (rock, electro, pop, hip-hop) where controlled distortion, wider stereo, or deliberate sonic destruction is sought. Thanks to band splitting and modulation, you can keep a clean low end while aggressively treating the mids, make distortion breathe with the rhythm of the input, or animate pads and leads with synchronized movements.
MultiMod brings together three of Waves' flagship distortions (Abbey Road Saturator, Berzerk, MDMX) in a single rack and allows inserting 3 instances of your choice. Each slot can also be replaced by another effect to build a hybrid chain: autopan, chorus, compressor, delay, distortion, or reverb. Result: a fast workflow to move from subtle multiband "edge" to radical sound design without juggling multiple windows.
The core of the plug-in relies on processing up to 3 frequency bands. Variable crossovers allow precise targeting of the area to excite, modulate, or dirty up. This approach is especially effective on buses (guitars, synths, drums) to achieve clearer saturation, or on vocals to enhance presence without muddling the low end.
MultiMod includes 4 fully parametric EQ stages with 5 response curves per stage. The real-time FFT display helps quickly adjust crossovers and EQ, facilitating mixing decisions and speeding up the search for the right balance between bite, brightness, and control.
The modulation section is designed for musical movement: 4 sources (switchable between LFO and step sequencer), the ability to draw LFO shapes and sequencer patterns, and addition of input amplitude as a modulation source for "reactive" playing effects. Most parameters are modulatable and feature MIDI Learn, convenient for live control (automation, controllers, performance).
Beyond simple autopan, MultiMod offers spatialization tools like stereo rotation and width control. Ideal for opening up a rhythm guitar, adding depth to a synth, or creating more "3D" movement effects without losing center impact.
