Waves SSL EV2 Channel is a channel strip plugin designed to quickly and musically process your tracks (vocals, drums, guitars, basses, synths, buses, etc.) with the signature sound of an SSL console. It combines preamplification, equalization, filtering, and dynamic processing in a single interface to achieve a denser, more present, and better-controlled sound, both in recording and mixing.
Recreated "from scratch," SSL EV2 relies on detailed modeling aimed at reproducing the response, precision, and character of the SSL 4000E console channel strip. The result is a more tangible analog feel: better-defined transients, solid mids, and immediate musicality when pushing the signal.
Instantly adapt the tonal character to your source: the "Brown Knob" EQ delivers a sharper, more forward edge, ideal for making vocals, snares, or guitars stand out. The "Black Knob" EQ offers cleaner and more flexible correction, perfect for finely sculpting a sound, cleaning up a take, or balancing an instrument without harshness.
The plugin includes mic/line inputs and their saturation behavior. Activate Analog mode to add THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) and achieve a livelier SSL grain, or deactivate it for a more neutral input and "digital" clarity. This is an effective tool to add body to a tame track, thicken a bus, or provide subtle natural harmonic compression.
The Dynamics section combines a soft-knee compressor/limiter and a gate/expander with a "program-dependent" behavior that musically follows the attack. A Fast Attack mode tightens transients when needed. As on the console, you can place dynamics before or after the EQ and filters, or even between them, allowing you to choose whether to compress an already equalized sound or equalize an already controlled sound. The automatic makeup gain streamlines workflow and speeds up adjustments.
Insert the EQ or filters into the dynamics sidechain to prevent a heavy bass from triggering too much compression, to let the kick breathe, or to target a specific frequency range. The external sidechain also enables modern mixing techniques (ducking, creative de-essing, controlled pumping) while maintaining the ergonomics of a channel strip.
With over 600 presets created by award-winning engineers and producers, SSL EV2 helps you quickly find a credible sonic direction (pop vocals, rock drums, tight basses, wide guitars, etc.). The Output section adds useful mixing options: width control and mono/stereo/reverse stereo modes to check mono compatibility, adjust the stereo image, or correct phase inversion.
