The creation of the work, in December 1813, is one of the greatest successes that Beethoven, as a composer, has been able to celebrate publicly. A critic wrote that this new symphony included themes "so pleasant and so accessible that any friend of music felt powerfully attracted by its beauty". The characterization of its themes depends essentially on the character of ostinato of the basic rhythms, which contribute to the formation of the outstanding specificities of each movement. Richard Wagner even went so far as to give this work, with his intoxicating Finale, the title of "Apotheosis of Dance". Based on the musical text of the complete edition of Beethoven's works and accompanied by a new preface, this very recent edition reports on the current state of Beethoven research. With this study edition, this text is now accessible to everyone at low cost and in a handy format.
