The 1958 "Burst" Myth, Recreated by the Custom Shop
Following the legendary "Bursts," this 1958 Les Paul Standard from the Gibson Custom Shop uses period-accurate assembly methods: hide glue, long tenon, nitro lacquer, and plastics formulated as in the 1950s. The Murphy Lab Light aging subtly reproduces checking, micro-dings, and patina, for the look and feel of a carefully preserved example from the late 1950s.
Intended Use and Audience
Designed for intermediate to expert guitarists, collectors, and purists, it excels in blues, classic rock, hard rock, and jazz. The 50s C neck provides stability and sustain, while the narrow frets offer very clear articulation and expressive vibrato. Its versatility and right-hand dynamics make it a studio and stage weapon.
Sound
The mahogany + maple combination delivers singing mids, silky highs, and generous sustain. The non-waxed Custom Bucker Alnico 3 pickups breathe and respond like PAFs: airy attack, woody grain, clarity in split-coil mode, and a thick tone in bridge position. The CTS 500K audio taper pots and Paper-in-Oil capacitors ensure a smooth sweep: you can clean up the amp at lower volumes without losing highs. The ABR-1 bridge and aluminum tailpiece add snap and stabilize tuning for a Les Paul that is both lively and singing.
