A sonic odyssey - the story of the Coma
Michael Landau has played on countless albums over the past forty years. He is arguably the artist with the most recordings in history. A distinguished studio guitarist in Los Angeles and an artist recognized by his peers, Landau is today a true electric guitar icon. His vibrant, dynamic, and endlessly creative playing has allowed him to transcend eras and musical styles. Mike has been heard on albums by Pink Floyd, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, B.B. King, Rod Stewart, Miles Davis, Boz Scaggs, Tim McGraw, Bonnie Raitt, and many others. The steadfast companion, pillar, blank canvas, and muse throughout Michaels career has been a 1959 Stratocaster® nicknamed Coma. Michael found this guitar in an L.A. store when he was 16. Its body had been repainted and pickups replaced; this gave him full freedom to customize the instrument over his career to follow the evolution of his style. The special Coma Red finish and the Coma drawn with a permanent marker make this guitar unique, having been modified multiple times over the years, changing pickups, electronics configuration, hardware, and bridge. The Coma version recreated for the Fender® Stories collection represents the guitar in its current state. It features custom ML Ultra Noiseless Strat® pickups in the neck and middle positions, and a custom Wide Range humbucker in the bridge position. It also includes a vintage-style six-saddle Stratocaster bridge with a cold-rolled steel block and vibrato; a neck built to the artists specifications, Fender ClassicGear? tuners, cavities for Floyd Rose®, and the famous faded satin red finish on the body. The Michael Landau Coma Stratocaster clearly displays a rich history reflecting a major artist in constant evolution. The guitar comes in a custom hard case embroidered with Coma, along with a pack of Coma stickers, a special strap, and the Coma booklet personally written by Michael.
