John Mayer is not only an outstanding singer and songwriter, he is also a skilled guitarist, equally at ease on a Strat as on an old Martin. This model is the result of his collaboration with the Nazareth-based brand.
Back to basics.
In 2003, while presenting his new pop-rock Hendrix-inspired album "Heavier Things," John Mayer fell in love with the simplicity of Martin guitars. Like any good songwriter worth his salt, he is capable of bringing intensity to a song without electric embellishments, as he demonstrated in 2012 with the acoustic album "Born And Raised." Meanwhile, the collaboration between Mayer and Martin became fruitful, with no less than three limited editions from the Custom Shop. And it all started in 2003 with the OMJM.
A modernized Clapton.
You can feel Claptons influence in Mayers choices, since at first glance the OMJM clearly resembles the 000-28EC. It features the same OM shape, the same Sitka spruce top with a beautiful honey tint, the stunning Indian rosewood body, and even the open gear tuners with butterbean buttons. But what sets them apart is what matters: the neck profile is much flatter and more modern, the rosette decoration is richer, and the OMJM is an electro-acoustic guitar, equipped with a Fishman Gold Plus Natural I preamp.
The Martin Mayer.
In other words, John Mayer took the excellent foundation established by Clapton and changed what most often posed problems for 000-28EC owners, namely the thick neck and the inability to play it on stage without installing a pickup and preamp. Otherwise, the OMJM remains a guitar perfectly suited to acoustic blues as well as pop, folk, or any other style where the guitar must support the voice with breadth and generosity. The OMJM combines both.
